Spring Cleaning, Hill Country Style: A Hill Country Homeowner’s Guide to Starting the Year Right!

June 8, 2025 by readvisoryteam

Spring in the Hill Country brings longer days, greener landscapes, and a natural urge to open the windows and start fresh. While spring cleaning often focuses on closets and cabinets, this season is also the perfect time to check in on the parts of your home that work hardest year-round!

After winter weather, especially freezes and temperature swings, a thoughtful spring reset can help prevent costly repairs and keep your home running smoothly.

Start outside! Walk the perimeter of your home and look for signs of damage from winter moisture or cold snaps. Check your roof for missing or curling shingles, clear debris from gutters, and make sure downspouts are directing water away from the foundation. In the Hill Country, proper drainage is key to protecting both slabs and pier-and-beam homes.

Next, turn your attention to mechanical systems. Schedule an HVAC service before summer heat arrives, replace air filters, and test your thermostat. If your home relies on a well, now is a good time to check pressure tanks and inspect exposed components. Septic systems also benefit from a quick visual check to ensure no standing water or odors are present after heavier rains.

In a region where drought conditions are common, spring is also the right time to check how efficiently your home uses water. Inspect outdoor faucets and irrigation lines for leaks, adjust watering schedules, and make sure rainwater or well systems are functioning properly. Even small fixes can make a meaningful difference during long, dry stretches.

Spring is also ideal for tree and landscape maintenance. Trim branches away from roofs and power lines, remove dead growth, and assess tree health before storm season. Healthy trees add beauty and shade, but unmanaged ones can pose a real risk during high winds.

Inside the home, look beyond surface cleaning. Check for signs of leaks under sinks, around windows, and near water heaters. Test smoke detectors and replace batteries. If your home includes rarely used spaces such as guest rooms, attics, or secondary living areas, spring is a good time to make sure everything is still functioning as it should!

A spring reset doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Addressing small issues now helps preserve your home’s value and provides peace of mind as the year unfolds. In the Hill Country, proactive care keeps your home safe, comfortable, and ready for whatever the seasons bring.
